Our Founder’s Legacy Lives On!

7 Nov

Barbra Watson-Riley Komen photoshootOur founder, Barbra Watson-Riley, was amazing!

Actually, she still is! Because although we remember the fourth anniversary of her passing today (11/7/2013), she lives on through her family and through the work of Pinkwellchick Foundation, Inc.

This year, PWCF’s amazing ambassadors assembled  over four hundred BARB’S BAGS® of chemo & radiation care and comfort during four events in five cities for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and delivery is underway!

In August, we also partnered with the Cobb Institute to stage LIFE in the CANCER LANE® during the National Medical Association’s annual convention in Philadelphia. We raised over $30,000 to produce the play and to support cancer research disparities in the black community as well as cancer patient and advocate education and support.

Barbra’s motto was to “DO SOMETHING” to improve the lives and health of women, particularly those in underserved communities. In her honor and memory, we encourage you to find a way to support a cancer patient, survivor, or caregiver today and to continue to support our efforts to do the same.

Thank you,

Tonya M. Evans, Esq., Chair

MEDIA ALERT: PWCF Board Chair Tonya Evans on WURD AM with Stephanie Renee McNeal 7/28 at 11 AM

27 Jul

TUNE IN THURSDAY, JULY 27th at 11 AM!

[LISTEN ONLINE TO WURD AM]

Pinkwellchick Foundation, Inc., Board Chair Professor Tonya M. Evans joins WURD AM host Stephanie Renee McNeal on “The Mojo” to discuss the upcoming benefit performance of LIFE in the CANCER LANE, by a stage play written by PWCF founder and Philadelphia native Barbra Watson-Riley. The play will be staged during the 115th National Medical Association Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly  held at the Philadelphia Convention Center (7/29-8/2). Watson-Riley is the late daughter of Philadelphia notables Dr. Bernard Watson, Sr. and Mrs. Lois Watson.

With honesty, heart and humor, LIFE in the CANCER LANE is told from the real-life accounts of survivors and their caregivers, examining life after diagnosis and what happens when these women are thrown head first into the Cancer Lane. Whether it’s the chemo side effects or loss of hair and friends, the play examines the twists, turns and bumps in the road along the breast cancer journey.

[LIFE in the CANCER LANE Sizzle Reel]

The performance will be held on Monday, July 31st at 8:00 PM in the Nutter Theatre at the Philadelphia Convention Center, a state-of-the-art 600-seat theater, with a post-show fireside chat and VIP reception to follow. Musical accompaniment is provided by V. Shayne Frederick. The play marks the close of the W. Montague Cobb NMA Health Institute’s 12th Annual Lecture and Scientific Program, Precision Medicine Impact on Breast Cancer in African-American Women that begins on Sunday, July 30th from 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm in Nutter Theatre.
