Heart Healthy

31 Jan

Pink Ink…

Tomorrow is National Wear Red Day!  It is also the 1st day of Heart Month.  You may be wondering why you should care.  The simple answer is that it will affect someone you know.  Period.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women.  It kills more women than breast cancer.

But, you can reduce your chance of getting heart disease!

  • Don’t Smoke! (Yes, people still smoke!  Why??)
  • Exercise: Try and do at least 30 minutes of exercise, 5 days a week.
  • Cut down your salt intake.  Most people don’t need more than a teaspoon of salt a day!
  • Monitor your blood sugar and blood pressure.
  • Find a way to ease stress!
  • Get a good night’s sleep!

At the end of the day, the best piece of advice is to take ACTIVE care of yourself.

Take the next 28 days and commit to learning more about YOUR heart!

Not sure how to kick off your day in a heart healthy way?  Try eating oatmeal!  Or, this easy fruit smoothie!  It’s right around 200 calories and serves 3-4.

Ingredients:

1 cup of mango or peach

1 banana

2 cups of mixed berries

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

8 ounces of orange, pineapple or apple juice

1 tablespoon of coconut flakes

Blend all the ingredients together until smooth.

My family starts each day with a smoothie.  We alternate with different fruits and sometimes switch up the juices.  Unsweetened juice is better to cut down on sugar and calories!  Costco and Sam’s Club have the larger frozen fruit bags, so you don’t have to worry about spoiled fruit.  Just make sure the fruit isn’t artificially sweetened.  Try adding Greek yogurt, or a tablespoon of peanut butter for protein.  Trust me.  You can’t taste it.  Experiment.  Get the kids involved!  Have a smoothie challenge!

My hubby always says you can do anything for a month.  Let’s put that to the test.

Join me in February, as we get…Heart Healthy!
