Know someone going through chemo? Here’s what NOT to say!

22 Sep

Do you know someone going through chemotherapy? Guide2Chemo.com offers some advice about how best to support them through their treatment. You may be surprised how your well intended comments may not have their intended effect. Keep Calm … and read on.

keep-calm-shhhh“Many people undergoing chemo have similar experiences—well-meaning friends and family who are unsure of what to say, inadvertently causing the chemo patient to feel, well…worse.

And Patricia Farrell, a psychologist in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, says hearing comments that make you feel badly can actually have an impact on your health. “Negative thoughts, even those brought on by other people’s careless remarks, can lower your immune system,” says Farrell, author ofHow to Be Your Own Therapist: A Step-by-Step Guide to Taking Back Your Life. ‘Unfortunately, many women feel obligated to be accommodating and fail to insist on boundaries in conversations.’

If you’re speaking with someone who is currently undergoing or recently underwent chemo treatments, unintentionally negative remarks are easy to avoid if you know which topics should be off-limits. Stay away from:

  1. False compliments
  2. Comparisons
  3. Death and limitations
  4. Anxiety-provoking comments
  5. Treatment woes”

We need YOUR help to deliver Barb’s Bag chemo comfort bags to underserved breast cancer patients

Barb’s Bag™ of Care & Comfort is an actual bag filled with essential items for chemotherapy patients to not only survive but thrive during their chemotherapy treatments.

Think of it as a chemo survival kit!

Our founder, Barbra Watson-Riley, received a “chemo bag” early in her “life in the cancer lane” from her dear friend, and former Pinkwellchick Foundation, Inc., board member Lori Hall-Armstrong. Barbra blogged regularly about how much she treasured that bag. It contained everything from an essential document organizer, to air sickness bags, aromatherapy, ginger candies, lotion, blanket, socks and much more.

Barb’s Bag™ of Care & Comfort is made of high-end material and includes a range of products that Barbra identified as essential when going through chemotherapy.  The bag also includes “Real Talk” information about what to expect during chemo and an exclusive access code to stream Life in the Cancer Lane (Barbra’s play, with Hollywood star of stage and screen Valarie Pettiford) from any device in the United States.

Sponsor. Donate. Volunteer.

There are three ways to get involved. Become a Sponsor, Patron or Donor to help PWCF to underwrite the cost of bag production and delivery or Volunteer to help assemble bags on the Day of Service.

Every dollar donated goes to produce and distribute Barb’s Bag™ for Bag It™ for the Cause Day of Service. Any undistributed bags will be distributed free of charge thereafter to female chemotherapy patients diagnosed with breast cancer. Note, in the future PWCF also plans to produce additional bags to offer via its  Bag It™ for the Holidays and the “Bag It,™ Give It” promotions.

Sponsor

We seek sponsors to help subsidize (or fully sponsor) the production and distribution of the bags. One hundred percent of sponsorship dollars is tax-deductible. Consult your tax professional for additional information. Each bag costs $50 to produce.
